"Perla di tutte le isole e le penisole", come la definì il poeta romano Catullo, questa sottile lingua di terra si addentra per quattro chilometri nel lago di Garda e custodisce sulla sua punta un vero e proprio tesoro: il paese di Sirmione, rinomata località turistica e termale.
L'estrema punta della penisola è occupata dalla zona archeologica delle cosiddette "Grotte di Catullo", resti di una grandiosa villa romana, inseriti in un ambiente naturale di grande bellezza.
La prosperità di Sirmione, oltre al periodo romano, si è manifestata sotto il dominio degli Scaligeri, che vi costruirono nel XIII secolo il Castello o "Rocca Scaligera", tuttora considerato il più bello tra i castelli superstiti dell'età scaligera.
The peninsula of Sirmione, approx. km 4 long, is much frequented because of its thermal spas. The peninsula has a luxuriant vegetation of olives, cypresses, laurels and magnolias.The remarkable Roman buildings, the tombstones, the capitals and other remains, testify to the ancient importance of Sirmione.
The prosperity of Sirmione, besides the Roman period, was particularly demonstrated under the domination of the Scaliger and of the Venetian Republic.
In the 13th century, the Scaligers built the Castle or Rocca Scaligera, erected as a fortress inside the ancient walls surrounding the Medieval Village.
Presently the Castle is said to be the most beautiful of the surviving Castles of the Scaligerian Age.
Die Halbinsel Sirmione, die sich ca. 4 km in den See hineinstreckt, ist dank der herrlichen Landschaft und der Thermalkuren sehr bekannt.
Die ganze Halbinsel ist ein herrlicher Naturpark, der von Wegen und Gässchen inmitten einer üppigen Vegetation von Olivenbäumen, Zypressen, Lorbeeren und Magnolien durchkreuzt wird. Römische Familien bauten an der Landspitze ihre Villen und Sitze.
Sirmione erlebte seine Blüte ausser in der Römerzeit besonders unter den Scaligern und der Republik von Venedig.
Im 13. Jahrhundert erbauten die Scaliger die Wasserburg oder das Kastell Scaligero als Festung inmitten der alten Ringmauer, die den alten Stadtteil umfaßt.
Noch heute kann man sagen, daß das Kastell in Bezug auf Form, Bauart und Erhaltungszustand das schönste der noch vorhandenen Kastelle der Scaliger ist.
